It's unavoidable at this point in time, so it never bothered me. Given, it does follow some horror clichés as the first did, such as predictable jump scares and the whole haunted child trope. What seems like a straightforward evil old guy haunting a family turns out to be something much more by the end, consequently and cleverly extending the Conjuring Universe. As far as the horror goes, it doesn't quite have the same palpable tension as the first, but the "theatrics" it offers, and the cunning design of two of the coolest "antagonists" in the movie - the Crooked Man and the Valak Nun - are just plain awesome. This said, they don't shy away from the skepticism throughout the movie, not just doubts about the Enfield residence but the Warrens themselves.
